Fundamentals of Digital Marketing

Crafting Your Digital Marketing

I've always been a fan of the steampunk aesthetic; I like the mashup of old fashioned widgets with futuristic technology. I used an AI image generator (Sora) to create the picture above to depict a craftsman working on steampunk technology. In a way, it's how I like to perceive myself - A person that combines traditional marketing knowledge with modern technology. A craftsman of digital marketing.

To be a master of your craft you have to understand the fundamentals. The tools and trends will change but you'll always be trying to achieve the same result.

Digital Marketing Fundamentals

There's multiple ways to approach digital marketing but it often gets conflated with being good at social media. Creating social media content is important, but your efforts will be minimized if other fundamental aspects of digital marketing are ignored.

  • Defined Digital Priorties
If you have more than five digital priorities then you don't have priorities, you have a list. Keep your priorities limited and defined so they can be accomplished with available resources. Choose priorities based on what's most important and achievable within a given time frame.
  • High Quality Website
Before investing in digital marketing, especially paid advertising, you need a quality destination for people to visit. Often digital marketing efforts fall flat because they're sending traffic to a website or page that is not optimized to convert. Get your house in order before inviting company over.
  • Authoritative Content
It's not who you know, it's who knows you. Invest in unique content that showcases your uniqueness or expertise and then get it out there. This can include  industry listings, blogs, published articles, webinars, backlinks/citations, and a strong Google Business Profile.
  • Email Marketing Strategy
Having an approved list of customer and prospect emails you can send direct messages to is the strongest marketing asset you can have. Period.
  • Paid Digital Advertising
Organic exposure will only get you so far; you have to pay to play. Maybe one of your organic posts will go viral but that's like hitting the lottery. It's a lot easier to reach people en masse if you're willing to put some money behind your efforts.
  • Digital Analytics Tracking
You can't manage what you don't measure. Having analytics is often a priority but treated as an afterthought. Understanding the basics will help you determine what efforts are working and which aren't. You don't need to measure everything, just what you deem most important for success.

What are you thoughts? Maybe I'm old fashioned regarding digital marketing, but if you like the cut of my jib I'm happy to be your digital craftsman.
